Audrey Thatch looked out of the bay window of an office that once belonged to her. The day was reasonably cloudly, with (as was forecasted) occasional brief showers, but it was as muggy as a mid-summers day and beads of sweat rested on Audrey's forhead and nose. Mopping them away, she paced around the room, checking the drawers of her desk as she walked past them.
"Right. Haven't left anything behind then, have I?" she mused, as her eyes fell on a few smallish piles of parchment - instructions, maps, codes. Anything that would be of use to the new captain.
Quickly flicking through the piles, she noticed a shall sheet of notes that she had written regarding a previous mission that had, as most others, remained unfinished. She slid the sheet out, folded it and tucked it into her pocket.
"You may come in handy later"
"That's not a healthy sign, cousin". A hefty sigh. Audrey heard loud footsteps walking up the deck, and the door swung open. Quiel looked around the small cabin with some disgust. It seemed to have gotten smaller since she had last visited Audrey, though perhaps it was partly due to her sheer pride in becoming the new captain over the rest of Audrey's motley crew. The room simply couldn't accomodate in size.
"talking to sheets of paper. No wonder you want to leave"
"Better talking to sheets of paper than being an hour late." Sniffed Audrey. "There are things that need to be on time in this profession, Quiel, one of which is showing up to meetings not on time, but early. You've wasted precious time that can now never be replaced."
Quiel sneered. "In case you haven't realised, I'm an elf. Like yourself. We have all the time in the world."
"That may be so, but some others don't have that time to waste like you do." Audrey's tone was abrupt. More threatening than usual. Quiel wasn't accustomed to her cousin talking like this and pursed her lips. She assumed it wasn't a good idea to take over the ship on bad terms.
"So is everything set?"
"All the papers you need are there. There's cupboard space near the bunk, and it would be in your best interests to go and become friends with your crew. I doubt that they'll accept you as their captain until they feel as if they can trust you, and thet won't happen if you sit in here all day and bark orders at them."
"And I suppose if I don't do all that, they'll maroon me on some godforsaken Island off the coast of Gilgamesh, alone and hungry for all eternity?"
"I wouldn't put it past them. If you ever need any help, you know how to reach me. I'll be back as often as I can to see how things are keeping up."
"Just as long as you don't try to take the Scabbard away from me."
"She is still my ship. She will always be my ship. If you damage my ship I may maroon you myself."
"Yes, yes." huffed Quiel indignantly, quickly filling the drawers with the belongings by ythrowing them in messily. Audrey cringed.
"don't let it turn into an Ubu-Ubu farm, alright? Otherwise I'll clean it up myself..." Audrey paused and smiled warmly at the younger elf. "Good luck Salome' Quiel... I'm.. just going to say my final goodbyes to the crew before I leave."
Picking up her bags, Audrey pushed open the cabin door and let it close behind her. She pushed her back against it and felt her heart beating harder than it had for centuries. This was it. She was no longer Pirate Captain, the thought ripping through her soul, tearing at the remaining fibres of dignity in her body. She was now officially a long forgotten nobody. A person who had once Done great things, thought great thoughts and was well known for them, so someone with a strong past, but shady future.
Her eyes watered slightly as she dropped her bags and made her way down to the mess deck to talk to her crew.
Inside the Captain's cabin, Quiel smiled to herself.
"Pirate Captain Salome Quiel Thatch of the Jaded Scabbard"
She rather liked the sound of that.
